“And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” – Gal. 6:9
Hey friends! I hope that you are well. Thank you so much for showing me love and so much support. I appreciate it so very much. And I appreciate you!!
What makes people persevere in the midst of hard times? Think about it. Some eighty-something-year-old people stricken with cancer decide to go through chemotherapy treatments. Some people who have had a number of tragedies to occur in their lives, who others would think should just give up and not even try any longer, still get up every single day and face it with courage anew. ‘Why even bother?’, some may assert.
There’s a strong will within the human spirit for self preservation. People want to survive. But I think there’s more to it – at least for me there is. When I’ve gone through dark valleys in my life, at times that will to live – that desire for self-preservation – wasn’t there. It was something else that kept me going, that keeps me fighting, and that keeps me pressing on each new day.
And that something is Jesus Christ. He’s the reason that I do not give up. “For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls” (Heb. 12:3). Jesus experienced more than you or I will ever face.
I know that whatever happens here on this earth is minute compared to the glory that will be revealed when the Lord returns for me. That’s what Christians hold onto for hope. “Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2 Cor. 4:16-17).
There is more to the push to persevere in hard times than human will to live. It’s not about my will; it’s about God’s will for my life. Just like Jesus wanted the cup of death to pass from Him yet He prayed not His will but the Father’s will be done, we must do the same. We may want whatever cup of sorrow, persecution, sickness, or hardship to pass from us, but we don’t let it stop us from pushing, from fighting, from pressing on – from doing the will of the Lord.
No matter what comes my way, I’ll keep thanking the Lord for a new day and asking Him to help me live it to His glory. It’s not about my will to survive; it’s about Christ’s will for me to live for Him.
Because I serve Jesus Christ, I will not lose heart.
I hope that you won’t either.
