Forget and Look Ahead

Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 3:13-14

lest we forget cross

Hey, friends! How are you? I hope that you are well. Thank you for continuing to read and show your love and support. I appreciate you!

We’re still in our study of Philippians chapter 3. The apostle Paul makes an inspiring statement about his past. He explained that he forgot about the things behind him in order to reach ahead to the things that were before him. He pressed toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:13-14).

That’s a great example that we have in Paul. Remember he made havoc of the church, dragged Christians out of their homes to prison, and breathed threats and murder against the disciples (Acts 8:3; 9:1). He ravaged the church before he became a Christian. Paul had a not-so-pretty past.

Yet, he stated that had to forget those things in order to move forward. He was no longer that person. Paul was a Christian serving Christ Jesus. And we can learn from his example.

We all have a past, things that were not-so-pretty. But, as new creations in Christ, we have to forget about what happened in the past and leave those things behind us. In that way, we’ll be able to move forward to all the good things that are ahead of us – like the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Ruminating on past failures, divorce, loss, or any other thing in our past that we need to let go of to move forward won’t help us. We have to leave those things that are behind us where they belong…behind us!

Let’s make an effort every day to forget those not-so-pretty things of our pasts and reach ahead to better things before us. There’s a goal of the prize of the upward call in Christ Jesus. And we can’t reach it while holding on to the past.
