The Absolute Truth, and Nothing But The Truth
We live in a world of uncertainty. It’s a world where people are changing their gender because they are unsure of who they are and were created to be. We live in a world where individuals deem it acceptable to shoot large numbers of people, just because they want to do it. Our world is one full of watered-down, tasteless versions of journalists who deceptively and maliciously seek out stories to destroy and impugn the newest politician’s character – all while compromising their own integrity and self-respect – and only for a fake news story! It is a sad world where it’s still up for debate whether aborting the life inside a womb is murder or not. It’s no wonder evil is rampant. People live by their own rules and flaunt it. If people’s standards by which they live their lives is whatever they decide for themselves, then that spells trouble for all of us. What is right is not relative to the individual. There is an absolute truth – a higher moral standard by which we all are to live. That truth is the Bible – the Word of God.
There must be a moral code that dictates what is acceptable in our society. It must be one that is true for all people, for all times. Otherwise, what is right, good, and just will change with the tides and be different for everyone. That moral standard is Christ, who is the embodiment of the Word. In John 8, verse 32, Jesus proclaimed, “I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man comes to the Father but by me.” He further stated in His prayer to God the Father, “Sanctify them by the truth, Your Word is truth” (John 17:17). We can know the truth. And we don’t have to go on a road trip across the country while we figure out ourselves to find it. The Word of God is accessible – God made it so through Christ.
So we’ve established that Jesus Christ is the truth and truth is the Word of God. But, since when is it, and for how long? John 1:1 tells us that “in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and; the word was God”. His Word – the truth – has existed from the beginning of time. Furthermore, “the entirety of [God’s] word is truth, and [His] righteous judgments endure forever” (Psalm 119:160). So it’s not just for Generation X or the Baby Boomers. “His truth endures to all generations” (Psalm 100:5).
We can go to the Bible for all of life’s questions, for “God has given us everything required for life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness” (2 Peter 1:3). There’s no need to ponder whether murder is wrong, whether God fearfully and wonderfully made us in His image and if we should change it, or whether it’s acceptable to spew hate and behave unlovingly towards others. The Bible is the ultimate go-to guide for living. It is the roadmap to heaven. People who live by their own made-up moral code have essentially claimed that Christ is not the way and that He is not the truth. They have made themselves to be their own god. Those who profess Christ realize that God’s “word is forever; it is firmly fixed in heaven” (Psalm 119:89). And “happy are those whose way is blameless, who live according to the law of the Lord” (Psalm 119:1)!
