Striving To Be Like Christ

“Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.” – Ephesians 5:1-2

Jesus lived a perfect and sinless life. He was and is considerate, patient, kind, loving, forgiving, and generous. That’s who I imitate. I want to have that kind of love that is all-encompassing – that’s forgiving and enduring. I want to be like Jesus. Do you?

Often it’s easy to look at other people and see what they are doing or saying and get caught up in that. But doing or saying what other people do is trivial, inconsequential, and absolutely meaningless when it comes to securing our souls’ home in heaven – especially when those people have not obeyed the gospel of Christ and do not live for Jesus.

What Christ is concerned about is: do you treat others how you want to be treated? Do you treat people with kindness, with respect, and with decency? Do you forgive others or do you try to hold things over their heads and inflict your own “punishment” on them? Are you compassionate? Do you lift people up or do you try to tear them down? And have you obeyed Jesus by, essentially, copying what He did when He died, was buried, and rose again?

Romans 6:3-4 says: Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” That’s how we please the Lord. And that’s what God calls us all to imitate – the life of Jesus.

People fail. People disappoint. People are human and not God. None of us are perfect. So, I’m not striving to be like any person.

I’m trying to be like Jesus Christ – the Lord and Savior of the world. Are you?

“But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy’.” 1 Peter 1:15-16
