Why Do Bad Things Happen To Good People?

“Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.” – Psalm 34:19

Cancer. Tornadoes. Car wrecks. Natural disasters. Debilitating illnesses. Have you ever wondered why bad things happen to good people? I’m not talking about the person who drinks too much alcohol, gets behind the wheel, and has an accident. Not the kind of things that are brought on by one’s own choices. But things that occur in people’s lives to no fault of their own. Why do bad things happen to good people!?

The bible says that the righteous (good people) will have many troubles, but the Lord delivers them out of them all (Psalm 34:19). It’s a fact that good people sometimes go through a lot of difficult circumstances in life. Perhaps the character of a righteous person is so strong that the Lord allows her to go through so much.

Afterall, God did say that He would not put more on us than we can bear (1 Corinthians 10:13). The Lord doesn’t cause bad things to happen to us. However, He does allow them to happen. Remember Job? God allowed Satan to attack Job because he was a good man who feared God (Job 1:1).

The Lord knows the character of His children. At times He wants to help us build certain aspects of our character. Tribulations and trouble produce patience (James 1:3). Troubles test our faith in the Lord. They also discipline us. Not like punishment, but training. Trouble and bad things in our lives train us to be even better people.

Notice what the Scripture says about discipline: “It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? […] For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it” (Hebrews 12:7, 11).

Whether we want to admit it or not, bad and challenging experiences in our lives make us better people. And God will deliver us out of all our afflictions. In the end, we have an improved character and God is glorified.

None of us are exempt from trouble, but the righteous person will have especially many troubles.

Bad things happen to good people all the time. But those struggles, those difficulties, and those troubles only serve to discipline a person, to test their faith, to build their character, and to magnify the Lord when He delivers us out of them.

    We live in a fallen world, and the words of Jesus found in John 16:33 I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart I have overcome the world. As I have shared many times when I am preaching it is easy to Praise God on the mountain top when things are going well for us as Christian, however, it is in the pity of the valley of darkness and despair that we still must Praise the Lord. All Christians will endure trials and tribulation in this world.

    Amen. I listened to a sermon on this earlier about the afflictions of righteous people, and sometimes we question what did we do wrong or are we being punished. Yet, being children of God does not cause us to be exempt from hardships. If anything, sometimes, it seems we have more but God brings us through and hopefully accomplishes a work in us in the process.

    Yes, we will all endure troubles. But we must still praise the Lord in the midst of our trials. Thank God for the comfort that John 16:33 provides. And thank you for your thoughtful comment. 😊

    Correct that is what my daughter and our family does she is chronically ill with rare diseases and adrenal cancer, we still Praise the Lord 🙏

    Amen. We live in a fallen world, but one day we will not. Our final destination is heaven, but until then, we may endure many things, but for those who endure, there will be great reward.

    I’ve been thinking about this topic quite a bit lately. This is a topic that often bends people or breaks them all together, especially when the suffering appears gratuitous. I’ve read my fair share of responses and none of the answers are wholly adequate. Even Job didn’t get any answer in detail, yet he did go from being heard to being seen (Job 42:5).

    For me, the clearer forms of “pain and suffering” are trials intended to remove dross and self inflicted folly, something I’m all too familiar with (lol). But even in our foolishness, God’s love can leads us to wisdom and wholeness, after you ram your head into a wall enough times you kinda start wondering if there’s maybe, ya know, a different less painful avenue in life. Sometimes we have to experience the bad to appreciate the good.

    Thanks. I read quite a few articles and commentaries on the subject of pain and suffering, as well, and was still left wanting. It’s a question that’s not easily answered. And, yes, God’s love does bring us to a place of healing and wholeness after we experience suffering. We sometimes need to go through the bad to be brought closer to Him. Thank you for sharing your insights on this topic.
