Christ Leads The Way

“If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.” – John 15:22

Our to-do lists are long. Apprehensions and hesitations to do some of them are wide. We can come up with many excuses why we don’t want to do something. That’s what Moses did. When God called him to lead His people, the Israelites, out of Egypt, Moses came up with a lot of excuses.

God had chosen Moses. ” But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt’” (Ex. 3:11)? God told him that He would be with him (Ex. 3:12). “Then Moses answered and said, ‘But suppose they will not believe me or listen to my voice; suppose they say, “The Lord has not appeared to you”’” (Ex. 4:1). God showed him the miraculous signs He would show the people (Ex. 4:2-9).

Still Moses had another excuse: “Then Moses said to the Lord, ‘O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue’” (Ex. 4:10). The Lord told him that He would help him speak (Ex. 4:11-12). Yet, Moses finally rejected God and asked Him to send someone else (Ex. 4:13). Then the anger of the Lord kindled against Moses (Ex. 4:14).

In essence, Moses just didn’t want to do what God had called him to do. He had all the excuses. He didn’t think he was qualified; he didn’t think the people would believe him, and he thought his flaws would get in the way of Him serving God. When he finally revealed his true feelings – that he wanted God to send someone else – the purpose of the excuses came to light.

Are you like Moses in that regard? Do you make excuses when God is calling you into His service? Or do you forthright say to Him, “Lord, I don’t want to do it”?

Remember the parable of the great supper? A man gave a great supper and invited many people. “But they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused’” (Lk. 14:18). Another said he’d bought oxen and said he had to try them out (Lk. 14:19). And another invitee said that he’d just married a wife and couldn’t come (Lk. 14:20).

They let personal belongings (v. 18), their work (v.19), and their families (v.20) be excuses for why they could not attend the great feast to which they were invited. And the man said that none of those invited would taste his supper (Lk. 14:24). Jesus said, “Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God” (Lk. 14:15)! The Lord is calling us all to a feast in His kingdom – the church.

Are you making excuses to the Lord like Moses did? Put your trust in Him today (Mk. 16:16). Obey Christ in repentance and baptism (Acts 2:38). Stop living a life of sin today.

Let’s not make excuses; Jesus said we are without excuse for our sin (Jn. 15:22). We also have no excuse for not believing in Him (Rm. 1:20).

Now is the time to give your life to Christ. Now is the time to stop sinning. Now is the time to turn away from evil practices. Now is the time to live right and heed the Lord’s call.

No more excuses.
