Jesus: King

“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” -1 Tim. 1:17

Hey readers! Thank you for sticking with me and being so supportive! As always, I appreciate you!!!

We’ve examined the many facets of Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus was a historical figure – He was born, He lived, and He died. (He also rose to life again.) Jesus was also a prophet, anointed by God the Father. He is also a priest – High Priest – who is superior to Aaron and the Levitical priests. He was not a mere man. Jesus of Nazareth was and is also a king.

It’s interesting that Jesus is a priest after the order of Melchizedek and Melchizedek was also a king – the king of Salem. But, hundreds of years before Jesus entered the earthly scene, it was prophesied that He would be King. Jeremiah the prophet wrote: “‘Behold, the days are coming’ – says the Lord, ‘That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; a King shall reign and prosper, and execute judgment and righteousness in the earth’” (Jer. 23:5).

Just as Jesus was anointed as a prophet and appointed as a priest by God the Father, He was appointed a king by God the Father, as well. Jesus said to His disciples, “And I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me” (Lk. 22:29). Kings have kingdoms. Peter and the apostles understood this when they said of Jesus, “Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins” (Acts 5:31). It’s the Father who exalted Jesus as King.

Jesus has authority as King. He reigns sovereign over all. Jesus said to His disciples, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth” (Mt. 28:18). He affirmed His future glory as King when He told the chief priests and scribes, “Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God” (Lk. 22:69). He knew that He would be seated on the throne of God the Father.

Jesus of Nazareth also avowed Himself to be King and to have a kingdom. When speaking with Pilate, “Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom is not of this world […]’” (Jn. 18:36). “Pilate therefore said to Him, ‘Are You a king then?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice” (Jn. 18:37). Jesus was born to be King.

He was recognized as King by His disciples. Nathanael said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” (Jn. 1:49). When Jesus entered Jerusalem to the crowds delight, they shouted “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! The King of Israel!” (Jn. 12:13). Even those who were not His disciples recognized Jesus as King.

“Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS” (Jn. 19:19). The man who sentenced Jesus to death ascribed to Him kingship. There was no mistaking; Jesus was King when He walked on earth and He still is today.

He can be King of your life if you will let Him. Jesus is a prophet, He’s our High Priest, and He’s King. Will you let Him reign and have control over your life? Obey the Lord in repentance and baptism today. Then He will deliver you out of the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of His dear Son (Col. 1:13).

May we all one day be able to sing the song of Moses and the song of the Lamb, saying: “Great and marvelous are Your works, Lord God Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the saints!” (Rev. 15:3).

“And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen!” – 2 Tim. 4:18
